CUBE I

Glass floating three-dimensional optical sculpture

A futuristic technique that uses painting on glass to fill transparent, geometric spaces whose visual explorations produce surprising variations of form with fantastic three-dimensional superimposition effects.

Different perspectives on floating shapes reveal to the viewer new perspectives within the space of this beautiful sculpture.

For this group of works in the series "Where the shark blows bubbles", artist Wilfried Grootens uses a very accurate technique of painting on glass plates which are then layered, assembled and polished perfectly to create three-dimensional shapes that seem to float in the glass.

The surprising effect is that by changing the point of observation, these shapes seem to change, creating variations of shapes, specular axes, doubled or tripled visual perceptions until they almost completely disappear as if dissolving into nothingness.

These three-dimensional floating optical paintings represent lively and colourful shapes, combining pictorial art with glass sculpture to create luminous paintings that take the form of imaginary microscopic creatures: there seems to be life inside the cubes and they are about to explode, like nuclear particles ready to detonate.

The design of each cube is so accurate and defined that the very thin layers of painted glass seem to disappear when the cubes are viewed from the side.

Using ornamental motifs such as spirals, swirls and whirlpools and drawing inspiration from stylised natural elements, the visual effect is truly mesmerising: these futuristic creatures seem to float in the air, and looking at them from any vantage point, it is hard to understand how they can take shape 'imprisoned' in multiform and elaborate glass cubes.
